It is a surgical procedure performed to relieve angina and reduce the risk of death from coronary artery disease. Arteries or veins from elsewhere in the patient’s body are grafted to the coronary arteries to bypass atherosclerotic narrowing and improve the blood supply to the coronary circulation supplying the myocardium (heart muscle).

Although arrhythmia (an irregular heartbeat) generally affects patients over the age of 60, younger individuals also sometimes suffer cardiac rhythm disorders. The possibility of recurrence of such disorders can be significantly diminished by providing patients who have undergone surgery with simultaneous treatment.

The aorta is the largest artery in the body, originating from the left ventricle of the heart and extending down to the abdomen. An aortic aneurysm (“ballooning”) of the aorta, usually representing a weakness in the wall of the aorta. Once diagnosed, the only treatment option is surgery. Either the aneurysm is removed and the damaged part of the blood vessel replaced with a man-made graft, or a “stent” is inserted without the need for open surgery. If the aorta valve is normal, complex valve-saving interventions such as the “David procedure” may be required.
